Where the cable runs

Six countries that built their zipline parks properly.

Jungle cable in the Yucatán, canyon crossings in Dalmatia, waterfall lines on the Big Island, the Antalya combo day, Thai treetop courses and the Punta Cana adventure parks. Six places to start, and the best ride in each.

The combo day

The zipline is rarely the whole day: quad, cenote, cable, lunch.

The pattern repeats from Cancún to Antalya. An hour on a quad or in a raft, a run of lines, a swim, then lunch under a palapa. It is why a forty-nine dollar Mexican day out beats a two-hundred dollar single-park ticket on almost every measure except the length of the cable.

Every combo day
Mexico

In the Yucatán the zipline comes with a cenote and a quad bike.

Three ways to spend a Mexican zipline day, what each costs to board, and which resort strip it leaves from.

The queue-formers

The zipline tours more riders book than anything else.

$50–150

Single-park tickets and the long courses. Rotorua, Dubrovnik, El Yunque, Chiang Mai.

$150 and up

Hawaiian waterfall parks, the Dubai Marina cable and the private guided runs.

Before you clip in

Every zipline has a weight range, and it is not on the booking page.

Operators run a floor as well as a ceiling, usually somewhere between thirty and a hundred and twenty-five kilos: the trolley needs a minimum to reach the far platform and the brake needs a maximum to stop you. Closed shoes are compulsory almost everywhere, most parks set a minimum age between six and ten, and wind or lightning closes a line with no notice. Ask before you pay, not at the platform.

Only on these lines

Three ziplines that are not just another canopy course.

A canyon park on the Slovenian border, a crossing above the Cetina gorge, and courses that string walking between the flying. Different problem, different cable.

Records

The Longest Lines

Bovec strung a park down the Učja canyon on the Slovenian side of the Italian border and calls it the longest in Europe. Elsewhere the record chasing is about speed rather than length, and Colorado runs a six-line course that claims the fastest in the state. Operators publish the numbers because riders pick on them.

Dalmatia

Across the Cetina Gorge

The Cetina cuts a green trench inland from Omiš and the cable crosses it eight times, the highest span a long way above the water. Three hours including the drive up the hill, and the last line is the one people talk about afterwards. It closes when the bura wind gets up, which in spring is often.

Platform to platform

Skywalks and Rope Bridges

Some parks string the walking between the flying: a suspension bridge over the same drop you crossed at speed a minute earlier, or a caged skywalk out to the launch platform. It slows the day down and it is usually the part people remember, which is why the longer courses build more of it than cable.
